United States obesity figures continue to dominate the news sources. Houston ranks among the top cities for obesity. Recent data reiterates the difficulty in battling the negative effects of obesity. Dr Eisemann has seen first hand with over thirty years of experience that obesity can take a medical as well as emotional toll. Patients that have managed to lose large amounts of weight consult with Dr. Eisemann for plastic surgery solutions to large noticeable amounts of excess skin.
Dr. Eisemann explains that these surgeries are manly reconstructive and should only be performed by expert surgeons. The average patient will need three or more procedures to remove the excess skin. Most of the surgeries are performed in multiple stages. The most common post massive weight loss procedures are brachioplsty (arm lift) ,thighplasty (thigh lift), and bodylift. Dr. Eisemann educates patients concerning the seriousness of the procedures and the risk of complication. These procedures are generally more involved and a patient should never seek out a bargain plastic surgeon to perform the procedures. Plastic surgery after weight loss that is disappointing to the patient can be especially devastating as most patient count the surgery as their reward.

The good news is older Americans who are healthy are still good candidates for plastic surgery. The bad news;the older the patient the less dramatic of a difference the patient will see. Just as a recent study showed that fitness levels decline with age, so it is with the elasticity of the skin. No where is this more evident with a facelift. Dr. Eisemann advises patients to seek facial rejuvenation as soon as they see the first signs of aging. This is generally from the mid thirties to forties. Dr. Eisemann explains to his patients that when the skin has less elasticity he is limited as to how tight he can pull the skin. When patients have had wrinkles for an extended period of time some of the surface wrinkles may remain after surgery. Skin elasticity also affects abdominal skin with the tummy tuck procedures. Older patients may not achieve the same level of tightness a younger patient would. Dr. Eisemann does not discourage older patients from plastic surgery. He believes that every patient should be prepared with realistic expectations.

People are living longer and due to advances in healthcare older adults can consider plastic surgery safely. As a recent article stated age, and lifestyle affect both older and younger adults with respect to their fitness and overall health. Seniors consult with Dr. Eisemann and express their concerns about not just facelifts, but even breast augmentation and breast reduction. As recent as ten years ago patients into their 60’s and 70’s were considered at risk for complications from surgery with anesthesia.
Dr. Eisemann explains to his patients that with the innovations in anesthesia and the increased safety in cosmetic surgery healthy senior adults are not at any increased risk solely because of their age. Patients are required to have a full medical clearance with their primary care physician including an EKG to be sure there are not any underlying medical problems. Dr. Eisemann makes sure that his older patients are prepared for a smooth recovery. He stresses the importance of someone taking care of them for at least a week. As a general rule age itself should not prevent a healthy patient from having cosmetic plastic surgery.

Houston is well known for southern charm and the beauty of our residents. The women are curvy and proud of it. Breast augmentation is very popular in Houston. Following general guidelines like those shared in a recent guide to breast plastic surgery help patients with a frame of reference when they arrive at their consultation with Dr Eisemann.
With over three decades of experience, Dr Eisemann informs women from the very beginning that all surgeons are not created equal. There is an art to plastic surgery. As Dr Eisemann shares before and after photos with his patients and he points out the necessity for photos to be consistent in quality. He instructs his patients on existing asymmetries with their chest wall, breast tissue, and nipple and areola. When Dr Eisemann points these out it helps patients to understand that those asymmetries will still be present after breast augmentation.
Patients need to understand that they were not perfect to begin with and they will not be perfect afterwards. Dr Eisemann’s patients are consistently happy as he makes every effort to meet or exceed their expectations.

Here in Houston where the plastic surgery environment is very competitive some surgeons will advertise ridiculously low prices and others will promote the idea that they are busier than any other surgeon.
Dr. Eisemann has seen the landscape change tremendously over the past 30 years. Breast augmentation is still the most sought after procedure has become much more widely accepted; however Dr. Eisemann advises his patients to use caution and common sense when selecting breast implant sizes. Patients should lean toward proportionate sizes to their body. There is a great deal to consider; for instance, how tall is the patient? What shirt size does she currently wear?
Dr. Eismann reminds the patient that they will not increase the width of their shoulders. So, what that means is that after surgery if their bust size is so large that they need to go up a size the shirt will not fit in the shoulders. Some patients would need to have shirts and dresses custom made. Also exceptionally large breast implants are more likely to become firm with excess scar tissue. Dr. Eisemann treats each patient individually and makes sure that breast implant sizes are mutually agreed upon by both him and the patient.

It seems as though every October since silicone breast implants were pulled off the market due to articles that surfaced about the link between breast cancer and breast implants. This October is no exception as another story considers the link. The FDA has determined time and time again that there is no link between cosmetic breast implants and breast cancer.
Dr. Eisemann has over 30 years of experience and has watched breast implant market come full circle . The original breast implants that were pulled off the market were a gel filled implant that was suspected of leaking and causing medical problems. Now, years later Dr. Eisemanm is implanting the new silicone gel implants. These implants are cohesive gel which means they remain intact. Dr. Eisemann takes the time to be sure that his patients are well informed concerning cancer risk. He explains that patients should perform a monthly self exam with or without implants. He explains that the patients should become aware of their breast in order to determine when there are irregularities. Breast implants do not prevent or cause breast cancer. They are a non-factor in the origin of the disease.

This administration promotes health and fitness every chance it gets. Recently, we saw on our local news channel a report showing the first lady, Michelle Obama hula-hooping for a fitness demonstration to local children. While we sit in what is still sweltering heat in Houston it’s hard to think about fitness for ourselves not to mention our families. Dr. Eisemann counsels his patients often concerning the benefits of exercise and plastic surgery. Contrary to popular belief, they go together. One does not replace the other. Patients that are good about diet and exercise and have small areas that they would like to get rid of are excellent candidates for liposuction. The hips, love handles, inner and outer thighs, upper and lower abdomen can all be sculpted. The incisions are very small (less than an inch) and well hidden in the creases. Recovery is only about 5-7 days. Patients are required to wear a compression garment (similar to a girdle) for 4-6 weeks following surgery. Most patients can resume exercise after 2 weeks; however , the garment should be worn during exercise to control swelling. Liposuction results are gradual and the final results are not realized until after 6-12 months.

It is amazing how a nice pair of jeans has become the measure for how a woman looks. Recently, a Houston article reported on the first lady of Japan winning an award for looking good in her jeans! Dr. Eisemann realizes that a day of shopping for jeans without finding suitable for purchase can leave a woman very frustrated. The good news is, for many woman sculting the body with liposuction can do wonders. Typically the areas where there are the most complaints are the outer thighs, inner thighs, abdomen, love handles, and upper back. Jeans accentuate buldges in these areas. Dr. Eisemann withover 30 years of experience can sculpt these areas beautifully. The patient has to have minimal laxity in the skin in order to be a candidate for liposuction. Dr. Eisemann is careful to sculpt around the muscle leaving a thin layer of fat to prevent dimpling and divets. The patient will wear a compression girdle after the surgery for 4-6 weeks. This helps to re-drape the skin. Many patients tell Dr. Eiseman that not only are they fitting nicely in their new jeans, they are wearing jeans they haven’t worn in years.

There is a great deal of misinformation available concerning butt implants and butt lifts. Dr Eisemann explains to patients that if they are considering having either a butt lift or butt implants that they should seek the expertise of ,first and for most an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon. The most glaring information patients have received about butt implants is that the infection rate is very high. Dr Eisemann has found that surgeons with his level of expertise rarely have the infection rate of less experienced surgeons. It is important to assure that the plastic surgeon a patient chooses for this procedure has full hospital privileges in case there is a subsequent complication. Butt implants need to be positioned expertly or the patient could in fact have a shift of the implant. When Dr Eisemann performs a butt lift he is careful to explain to the patient that the skin is lifted up and the excess skin removed. This does not mean that the fat is lifted also. They may need a fat transfer to the butt or an implant to achieve the best aesthetic look. Choosing the right implant is crucial. With Dr Eisemann’s years of experience he is careful to select an implant that will not protrude and cause a “bubble look” The key is to balance the shape and Dr Eisemann is an expert at achieving the correct balance.
